Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. THEOPOETICS uses an unconventional review process which requires a commitment from the author beyond the actual submission of a proposal. Submission of a paper for inclusion requires an agreement that the person submitting take place in the selection process detailed below.

Each submission will either consist of (1) a 500 word or less academic abstract or (2) the entirety of a book review, poem, or reflective essay. Once all proposals for an issue are received they will be uniformly formatted without names and made available to everyone who submitted via email: submitters will themselves be the jury of peers by which proposals will be evaluated. Everyone who submitted an academic abstract will assess all the others who submitted the same. All those submitting poems, the othe poets, etc.

The intent here is to allow for a more equitable and egalitarian selection process. Each person who submits will select the three other proposals that most interest them, and the four proposals generating the most interest among the group will be asked to write the full papers to be included in the issue.

The THEOPOETICS editorial team does not serve as gatekeepers who select which articles are to be included. Instead, they serve to assist with the actual editing of the pieces which have been selected by the group comprised of those submitting for a given issue. They can also be contacted in advance of submission to answer clarifying questions.

  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.

  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
